Family Allowed to Proceed After Agreeing to Stop Using Shared Cemetery

(Gujranwala, Pakistan) – Police and local anti-Ahmadi activists blocked the burial of an 80-year-old Ahmadi woman in Gajju Chak, District Gujranwala, between 23–24 February 2026 and allowed it to proceed only after community representatives signed a written undertaking not to use the shared cemetery for future burials.

After Amat-ul-Manzoor died on 23 February, police told her family to arrange the burial outside the village despite the Ahmadi community’s established landholding and shareholder rights in the local graveyard. The family refused.

Officers returned late at night and again pressed the family to move the burial. By the morning of 24 February, senior police officials, including the Senior Superintendent of Police and other district officers, arrived with a large contingent and told community members the burial could go ahead only if they agreed in writing to stop using the cemetery.

According to community representatives, police drafted the undertaking at the site and required them to sign it before allowing the burial. The document stated that Ahmadis would not bury their dead in the shared graveyard in future and would instead make alternative arrangements.

The burial was carried out after the document was signed.
